Gold Coast Masterclass Series with Lawrence English
Over the past 10 years, Lawrence English has been one of the leading international voices in field recording. Working extensively across the world, from Antarctica to the Outback and the Amazon to Japan, his recordings display an utterly personal approach informed equally by technique, theoretical investigations and aesthetic interests.
This amazing artist will work with Bleach Festival during the GC2018 Commonwealth Games to deliver a world premiere project. As he embarks on the creation of the sound work, a select group of 10 emerging sound designers, artists and music producers will be invited to participate in this Sound Masterclass Series.
The Gold Coast Sound Masterclass Series will be delivered in four instalments, and successful applicants will participate in each.
To take part in the Gold Coast Sound Masterclass series, please submit 2-3 examples of your work as links, a brief (300 word) bio, one page CV and 200 words on what you hope to learn from this process to firstname.lastname@example.org by 5pm August 31st 2017.
Sound Masterclass Series.
Masterclass 1 – Thursday 12th October 2017
Modelled on his Radical Listener Masterclass which has been presented at numerous festivals and universities, Lawrence English will share his unique approaches to field recording in this introduction to the Masterclass Series. Lawrence English will guide participants through the specific techniques of field recording and the listening he employs in his work through the varied landscape of Burleigh Beach, town and headland.
Masterclass 2 – February 2018 (date TBC)
The second instalment of the Sound Masterclass Series will include an intimate conversation and demonstration of English’s compositional process. Emerging producers, sound artists and designers will be shown his personal approach which is informed equally by technique, theoretical investigations and aesthetic interests.
Masterclass 3 – 6th & 7th April 2018
Participants will be invited to explore the technical and aesthetic implications of sound spacialisation in performance. They will also have a chance to explore the production set up for a site-specific sound work. They will gain insight into how live and pre-recorded sound can interplay throughout a durational performance.
Masterclass Debrief – 7th April 2018
In final instalment of The Gold Coast Sound Masterclass Series, participants will be invited to give feedback on the work, share their own work and processes they’ve learned and gain advice on their own practice.
